Modes of Engagement #1

First of, I would like to show Richard Serra's list of verbs, I think it's a great source for conceptualizing and
bringing in modes of engagement.

Mode of engagement #1-

1. Placing certain objects that people can walk through and experience the setting in a different way. When someone walks in through the object, their perspective of the setting shifts through isolation and specific views from the inside. Whether it be certain materials that can distort what the person is looking through, or even the form of the object itself can trick the viewer into seeing the space differently from the inside and when they're out, they can't see it the same way they saw it from the inside.

2. This idea relates to our thesis through shifting the perspective of the viewer and giving a sense of disconnection when they're isolated in an object. When they're outside of the object they suddenly feel connected because of all the nature that surrounds. This can even be vice versa, depending on how you look at it. It all falls to the category of perspectives and distortion.

3. Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels (see image below), experiencing the tunnels from inside and outside causes the viewer to notice the change in the time of day, weather, or angle of the sun. The surrounding landscape beyond the tunnels plays a role as well by changing people's personal experience of the landscape by having the tunnels placed in the landscape.

4. We can think about using materials that can create some kind of object that people can walk through (maybe a globe? but that's just an example) and be able to see the space differently from the outside and the inside.
